A jet ski is a personal watercraft, and in Queensland it needs its own PWC licence. One thing to know before you book: to sit the jet ski course on its own you must already hold a current recreational boat licence. If you do not have one yet, our Boat and Jet Ski Combo covers both together in a single day and is the usual route for first-timers.
You complete the theory online first, then ride on sheltered Sunshine Coast water at Caloundra, Maroochydore or Noosa with a local instructor. You sit the assessment the same day, and once you pass, the certificate you need to apply for a PWC licence lasts for life. If you need more time on the water to feel competent, we would rather you took it.
A personal watercraft licence lets you legally ride a jet ski or PWC in Queensland. It is a separate class from the boat licence, and it builds on it: the standalone jet ski course is for riders who already hold a current recreational boat licence. Everyone else takes the combo. Once issued, the PWC licence does not expire.
Jet skis are fast and responsive, so the course spends real time on safe speed, keeping clear distances, and the no-wash and speed zones that apply close to shore and in the Sunshine Coast canals and passages. You learn the rules that keep you and others safe.
After the online theory, the practical day is hands-on. You learn to launch, control and re-board the craft, read the water, and handle it confidently in sheltered water. Patient local instructors are used to nervous first-time riders, so you build confidence quickly.
You do not need your own jet ski or gear. We supply the craft, lifejackets and all equipment, plus the launch site and sheltered water. Bring photo ID, sun protection, and a towel and change of clothes, since the jet ski day is a wet one.
Every course is run by experienced local instructors on sheltered Sunshine Coast water. We are a BoatSafe approved provider, so the certificate you earn is the one Queensland accepts for your recreational marine or PWC licence.
